  • Reading Matters!

Posted by Janice Askew on 3/24/2020 1:20:00 PM

If students have books out, please allow then to read the books before returning them. Set aside at least 20 minutes per day for your child(ren) to read uninterrupted.  A student who reads 20 minutes per day will be exposed to 1,800,00 per year and can score in the 90th percentile on state tests.

These are days like we have NEVER seen in our lifetime.  My great-grandmother, Etta Jane Proctor Asbell, passed away during the Great Flu Epidemin in 1918.  My grandmother, Willie Elizabeth Asbell Morgan was only 5 years old.  Her grandmother helped raise her even though she had dementia.  My grandmother learned to cook, sew, plant, and harvest at a very early age.  She did not finish 5th grade.  So, she was always thirting to know how to read better.  I had the honor of teaching her as I learned myself.

As we travel down this path of uncertaintly, this is certain:  Use it or lose.  Please allow your children to continue to hone their reading skills in the comfort of their own home.
