Gates County High School is a small public, rural high school located near the geographical center of Gates County. People in our county used to be primarily farmers, many for generations, but our county's increase in population has given us residents from many different areas and an ever-increasing number of families who travel outside the county for their jobs.

Demographically, we find ourselves in a county of 12,244 residents. We are surrounded by Virginia on our northern border, the Chowan River on our southwest and southern border and the mighty Great Dismal Swamp on the east. The closest semi-urban center of any kind is 25 miles away. The largest employers in our county are the county government and the school system. Otherwise we hail a few small logging and trucking operations.

We are blessed with a nice, historic public library, a large and lively religious community with many protestant church denominations, and finally Merchant's Millpond State Park, truly one of the most beautiful places in the United States. This ecological gem is visited by people all over the world and offers our students and citizens a look into the past and future of the ecology of Northeastern North Carolina.

Our school is spread out among several old and new buildings. Currently, builders are working on an athletic complex, which will house classroooms and our new gymnasium. We are lucky to have many highly qualified teachers working here. We know most of our students do not remain in our area and need the benefit of a global view, while recognizing the beauty and wisdom of our own area. Our mission statement is to provide a challenging, creative, and invigorating educational environment that prepares students for success in a changing world.
